The concept of terroir is an at times debated, oft overlooked, imperative concept in the world of wine. That the ecosystem… the soil, plants, and climate, could directly affect the character and flavor profile of a crop has always fascinated me. This idea has long been a driving idea in the world of French wine. Take the steely, mineral wines of Chablis that thrive in the Kimmeridgean soils comprised of limestone, clay, and oyster shell. Further down south in the region of Provence, one will find wines that can reflect a bit of a different terroir concept, which brings me to the Fleurs de Prairie 2018 Rosé.
Fleurs de Prairie, which translates as “wildflowers”, celebrates the fields of lavender, poppy, and myriads of other flowers that surround vineyards in Provence. In addition, the Mediterranean climate of the region causes the garrigue, or low lying herbal scrubland, to thrive as well. These factors are very commonly used descriptors in the Provencal region and already give one an idea in what to expect from this elegant Rosé.
Fleurs de Prairie is comprised of 60% Grenache, 15% Consult, 15% Syrah, and 10% other native varietals. This is crafted in a very traditional Provencal fashion, meaning that is elegant, expressive, and dry. Pale salmon in hue, the wine has delicate floral aromas followed by dashes of white peach and wild strawberry. Plenty of red fruits are found on the medium bodied palate with flashes of fresh herbs followed by a zippy, refreshing acidity. There is still plenty of warm weather left and this wine is an ideal match for hot days, grilled fish, and summer salads. After that, you will find this wine to be a positively lovely match for turkey on the Thanksgiving table.
