A New Year, A Diet, and An Outstanding Malbec
Well, the new year has beckoned, and I hope 2018 finds you well. It finds me on a diet, a regimen that I like to claim I was roped into. More realistically, it was half my idea and is a venture in solidarity with that gal I choose to spend much of my time with. Yet, I won’t claim it has been easy to see so many foods I love disappear from my life and only have vegetables and lean meats fill their void. So, my appreciation for wine has only strengthened this January, which is why I was tickled when I tried the new 2015 vintage of Decero’s Remolinos Vineyard Malbec.
Hailing from the sprawling, desolate region of Agrelo in Argentina, Decero takes a hands on approach from beginning to end with their winemaking process. The beginning sees fruit harvested from a single vineyard, called “Remolinos”, sitting at 3500 feet in height and named after the tiny whirlwinds that flow through the vineyards and cool the vines during warm summer days. These attributes cause a slow maturation of the grapes that show immediately in the wine by means of freshness and complexity.
I found the juice to possess a real elegance in comparison with many Argentine Malbecs that are on the market. The aromas are red fruit all the way… ripe cherry, juicy strawberry, and pomegranate intertwine with a faint violet component in the background. The palate is medium bodied with bright acidity that brings out the aforementioned freshness. Decero’s Malbec is soft, round, and infinitely drinkable with a splash of spice on the finish that adds interest. It found a fine pairing with my spaghetti squash and red sauce and even was so kind as to distract me that I wasn’t eating real pasta.
The 2015 Decero Remolinos Vineyard Malbec found itself seated at #34 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 in 2017 and earned 91 Points. It’s rare to see such a harmonious and balanced Malbec of this sort as so many have come to be one-dimensionally jammy, so this stuff is a welcomed break from the norm. The wine retails for $19.99 a bottle and you can receive a 10% discount with a purchase of six bottles or more. Due in store Friday so just let me know if I can set some aside for you!
