ATTITUDE FOR SPRING!
If you are anything like me, a nice Sauvignon Blanc in warmer weather holds a special
place in your heart. The problem is that they can be as varied in personality as my cat, Beef,
and god knows a fair share of his personalities are simply no good. Although we sell a hell of a lot of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, many of them just smack you over the head with grapefruit aroma and flavor; the Chileans usually display a slightly “green” vegetal note, and the affordable Californians seem to lack any real defining character. I do love France’s Loire Valley though, and it seems I’ve found a very elegant Sauvignon Blanc with a simply lovely personality (Beef at his best) for a very approachable price—the wine is Pascal Jolivet’s 2015
“Attitude” Sauvignon Blanc.
If you know Pascal Jolivet, you are aware they are known for making quite well regarded
Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé in the Loire Valley. “Attitude” is made in quite the similar fashion as
their delicious Sancerre’s, but the fruit is sourced from the Chevery appellation outside of
Sancerre. Interestingly enough, this fruit comes solely from a single vineyard that employs organic practices.
The year 2015 was a very good year in Loire Valley, and I think the resulting juice
demonstrates that quite well, as the winery’s approach is simply to let nature take its course with
wild yeast fermentation. The aroma is quite pleasant, floral with lemon and peach all in unison.
The palate is fresh and nicely balanced, with a rich roundness to contrast the crisp minerality on
the finish once the wine has opened up a bit. Overall, this stuff possesses a real elegance and,
most importantly, a balance not typically found in its brothers and sisters in the same price range. It is perhaps one of the few wines that would pair well with asparagus and perhaps a lemon pepper roasted salmon filet.
