Let me start with a disclaimer. I typically hate on Chilean wines. That stuff Carmenere that they are most known for is often times a flabby uninteresting fruit bomb while a fair amount of others have shown a green, vegetal sort of characteristic. However, I have recently been proven quite wrong with a few absolutely delicious and complex wines... from Santa Rita's Triple C to Don Melchor's Cabernet Sauvignon. These two wines are rightfully expensive and highly regarded, but Vina Montes delivers a wine of regard at a fraction of the price.

The first impression I received from the 2014 Vina Montes Cabernet Sauvignon was a surprisingly bright freshness to the wine that brought to mind ripe black cherry, vanilla, and an earthiness that suggests the soil from whence it came. The complexity here is of note... one gets plenty of fruit but there is also a good bit of barrel characteristics, (it spent 8 months in French Oak, after all) some of which include tobacco, smoke, and spice. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied and structured with good tannins and a crisp acidity that make it a perfect food wine.

Vina Montes 2014 Cabernet retails for $9.99 a bottle and was #42 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list last year, scoring 90 Points and a "Best Values" designation. The stuff isgoing very quickly, but we have five more cases coming. It is first come, first serve, and I can try to grab some more up next week, but certainly no guarantees.
