In order to pique your interest for our Sangiovese tasting coming up in February, I wanted to share a fantastic value Italian wine to help get you through this sudden cold snap. Enter Capezzana's 2013 Barco Reale di Carmignano, which showcases a fantastically modern yet elegant Sangiovese blend. The desire of the Capezzana estate is to recall the Tuscany of distant times and maintain the identity of the wine and land while employing the accumulation of knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation. While "Super Tuscan" wines are a fairly recent development, Carmignano has been blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon since the 18th century, and they know how to do it very well. It really is no wonder that Carmignano is the only region producing Super Tuscan-esque blends to be awarded a DOC status. As for the blend, the wine is comprised of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Canaiolo. The juice spends six months in casks from the Allier forest in France and then rests for a few months in the bottle before its release. Boasting a beautiful crimson hue, aromas of fresh black cherry, and a hint of spice, the wine is incredibly balanced, elegant, and has a surprisingly long finish. It displays a good bit of nuance for the modest price it asks.
The enjoyment parameters for the Barco Reale are as follows: it is meant to be drunk young, often, and with food... or without it. Fairly simple. So, if you are anything like me, in that you are not acclimated to this weather at all even though you have dealt with it your entire life, this is the elixir you are looking for. The price is a very budget friendly $14.99 per bottle or $161.90 for the case plus tax. If you like the stuff and decide to stock up (say five cases), we are offering a 5L magnum bottle just to say thanks. We look forward to hearing from you!
