We know that everyone misses hearing from Roger; who wouldn’t want to get their wine tips from one of the best wine gurus that ever lived? (It’s hard to be objective here.) But as much as we all miss him, it is our job to keep sharing with you the inside trader tips on any wines that come our way that we feel deserve your attention and your enjoyment. That’s why tonight we are letting you know, just in time for the holidays, that a small amount of the 2011 Ramey Wine Cellars Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay is available to those who order first.

Lest you wonder what Roger would say, here is a direct quote from one of his emails dated April 2, 2012: There is no secret about my perception of David Ramey being, arguably, among the best five winemaker’s in California. From his nascent days at Chateau Petrus after he wrote the benchmark thesis regarding how wines create more appealing flavors (okay, you want the title….How does “Volatile Ester Hydrolysis or Formation During Storage of Model Solutions and Wines” sound?); to his more recent work as now owner of Ramey Cellars, after being winemaker at Chalk Hill, Matanzas Creek, Dominus, and Rudd Cellars, all the while consulting for a number of wineries. He is the bomb, though his wines can be fairly luxury priced. (Someone pointed out to me that Robert Parker Jr. came close to repeating those same words in December 2013.)

In fact, Parker said this about the Hyde Vineyard Chard:

The 2011 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard reveals slightly higher acids along with more concentrated tropical fruit notes such as pineapple and tangerine, medium body, excellent purity, and surprising length and richness for a 2011. It, too, should be drunk over the next 3-4 years. - 93 points David Ramey has long had one of the most impressive resumes for any California winemaker. He worked at Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux and for Christian Moueix at Dominus. He also consulted and worked for a number of high end Napa Valley wineries. Of course, his first love is Ramey Wine Cellars, and he has built an extensive empire of Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignons and more recently Syrahs as well as a tiny quantity of Pinot Noir (talk about going to the dark side).
