The 2010 Barolo vintage has been heralded as being perhaps the finest ever. Before you run out and load up, be aware that one has to travel back to 2002 before a bad year is found so there is a lot of great Barolo running around. My glad!! Ever since we hosted that dinner at M with Sylvia Altare, I have been smitten with these remarkable wines, and the family’s passion about the approach to making Barolo. They have rewritten the book for great Barolo and this vintage makes that point.
With that in mind, with the 2010 vintage, I am only going to write about very special Barolo, or very great deals on Barolo. Which brings me to what Parker has to say about these as I have only had the regular Barolo. I must share theyse are tannic, but so refined and perfume-y that smelling them is good for the two to four hours as you let them breather.
2010 Elio Altare Barolo: “The 2010 Barolo sees fruit sourced from La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba and shows great fruit intensity with ripe tones of dark fruit (it is aged in neutral oak). Even the wine’s appearance is slightly darker and more concentrated that neighboring wines. The Serralunga d’Alba quality of ripe fruit and power really comes through, especially in the more nuanced and elegant 2010 vintage. The bouquet opens to reveal more spice and tobacco with time. The wine’s fullness and generosity work very nicely in this expression. Drink: 2017-2028. 94 points”

2010 Elio Altare Arborina Barolo: The 2010 Barolo Arborina shows a strong fruit profile with cherry and cassis that sets it apart from the 2009 vintage that is extremely generous in floral tones of crushed flower and rose. This expression shows great power and substance with 20 to 30% new oak. This is a precise and sharp wine with a heightened sense of focus and definition that is backed by pretty mineral shadings. Hold this wine ten years or more. Drink: 2017-2035. 96 points”
