DIAL 'M' FOR PINOT
Speaking of pinot noir (say what?), I have a few cases of the 2012 Melville Block M Pinot Noir. This Santa Rita Hills red is made by Greg Brewer, and I know some of you were at our store the night we hosted him for a comprehensive tasting. He is a true study, having taught college level French courses, then opting to work in a winery in Santa Barbara where he caught the winemaking bug. Thank God he did for this new pinot noir is among the highest rated California pinots ever, at least according to the newest Wine Advocate, and certainly the least expensive when you consider its stable mates are fetching anywhere from $100 to $800 the bottle. I have not tried the wine and probably will not as there is too little for me to keep any. I have included two reviews, one from Greg Brewer, and the other from The Wine Advocate. From Brewer: Boasting a dark crimson hue, opulent fruit aromatics of apple cider, brandied cherries, strawberry gelatin and black currants are immediately apparent while more gentle nuances of toasted nori, soy, perilla leaf and cinnamon stick linger in the background. On the palate the wine is pristine and intense with a gorgeous purity that finishes with significant length and density.
From The Wine Advocate: One of the top Pinot Noirs in this report, Melville’s 2012 Pinot Noir Block M saw the same vinification and elevage as the Terraces, with 80% whole cluster and 18 months in neutral oak. It’s a fabulous wine that gives up notions of ripe currants, plum, underbrush, caramelized meats and spice in its rich, voluptuous and decadently styled palate. The texture here is something, and yet it stays classy and pure, with blockbuster length. It’s hard to resist now, yet should evolve gracefully going forward.
